Why does the sun go on shining?

Michael Kennedy is an Australian artist currently undertaking an artist residency in Fujiyoshida, Japan. He explores identity and personal iconography by building upon and challenging the referential and communicative qualities within painting traditions through mark-making, repetition and motifs.

The works meditate on the act of painting in a highly technological era. He reduces the process of painting to its bare minimum through the emphasis of mark making, which is achieved by projecting and painting magnified pen scribbles onto a variety of unconventional substrates. This builds upon traditional uses of painterly abstraction with reference to a fast-paced consumer culture.

The repetition of motifs throughout the work is representative of the saturation of throw-away imagery in contemporary society, and blends the strategies of both ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture into a flat surface devoid of hierarchy.

Through the interaction of mark-making, repetition and motifs, Kennedy aims to spark a dialogue between painting traditions and contemporary culture in an exploration of personal history and iconography.

マイケル・ケネディは、富士吉田市で活動 しているオーストラリア出身の芸術家で す。 絵画には、描きなぐり画法や模写やモチー フを用いて、過去の歴史や考え価値観を伝 える特性があります。彼は、それをもとに して彼自身のアイデンティティーと偶像を テーマに制作活動を行っています。

作品は、ハイテク時代の芸術をイメージし たものです。彼は、一風変わった様々な素 材に太筆で力強く描くことでペインティン グの過程を最小限まで減らしました。 この走り書きは、芸術家の手の動きを連想 させるものであり、抽象的な事象を伝統的 な道具である’筆’によって表現しています。

作品の中である有名なモチーフを模写する ことで、現代社会の消費イメージを見る人 に連想させます。また、ハイカルチャーと ローカルチャーの平等で階級のない社会へ の融合も表していています。

自分史と偶像学を探求する過程において、 描きなぐり画法、模写、モチーフを通し て、伝統的な文化と現代的な文化の掛け合 いを表現しようとしています。
